The trade-off. It needs mains power. IP44 is a manufacturer claim, not a verified separate rating for every adapter or control component.

Fine string or festoon?
Fine fairy strings create small points of light along plants, fences or pergola edges. They can trace a shape without making each unlit bulb a large visual feature.
Festoon bulbs are intentionally visible. They suit an outdoor dining area or a line across a patio when the bulbs themselves belong in the design. Compare bulb spacing and the actual illuminated run; neither format is universally better.
Mains, battery or solar?
Mains offers predictable power but needs a suitable socket and cable route. Battery sets make isolated small displays easier, with replacement cells and accessible boxes to manage.
Solar moves the problem to panel placement and charging conditions. Read the battery guide or solar guide for focused comparisons; a representative option here does not settle every power-source question.
Outdoor does not mean every part is equally protected
Check the light string, control box, battery box, solar panel, adapter and power connection separately. Ollny solar rates its string IP44 and panel IP65. Govee rates the string and box IP65 and adapter IP44, but explicitly requires the adapter indoors.
Follow the manufacturer’s installation conditions and use an appropriate outdoor power arrangement. Electrical Safety First explains safe outdoor lighting power connections. A headline waterproof claim cannot replace those instructions.
How much unlit lead do you need?
Measure from the first point you want illuminated to the power location, including the route around obstacles. The advertised decorative length and unlit lead are different measurements.
A weather-resistant string is not much use if the plug ends short of the socket. Solar leads similarly restrict how far the panel can move into sunlight. Unknown lead lengths in the table are not treated as zero.
What the smart upgrade buys
Individually controlled colour, scenes, voice control and a substantial bulb format can matter when you want a patio feature that changes with the occasion. Govee’s warm-white capability also differs from a basic colour-only effect.
Those features bring an app, power planning and a non-cuttable product. Decide which controls you will use; the guide does not assign everyone the same value to them.
Year-round ambience or a Christmas installation?
A dining area or balcony often needs a subtle repeatable evening look. Roofline icicles, dense clusters and large seasonal displays ask different questions about shape, installation and storage.
