Outdoor Christmas lights are one of those products where the word “outdoor” can hide quite a lot.
A string might be weather-resistant while its plug needs shelter. Another product might be designed to live permanently under the eaves. Icicles suit a roofline; cluster lights make more sense on a shrub; a 100m string is useful when you genuinely have 100m to cover.
So rather than rank five completely different products from first to fifth, we’ve picked them for different outdoor jobs.
Start with the outdoor job
Five distinct installations. No ranked Top 5.
| Product | Format | Coverage | Power | Light IP | Adapter / controller IP | Timer | Best location / use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ollny 1000 LED / 100m warm white | Long string | 100m lit + 3m lead | Mains / 31V | IP44 claim in manufacturer imagery | Separate ratings not confirmed | 4h / 6h / 8h | Large garden, trees, fence or pergola |
| Ollny 400 LED / 10m icicle lights | Icicle / hanging drops | ≈9.8–10m + 3m lead | Mains | IP44 | Controller weather claim; separate IP unconfirmed | Yes / 3 settings | Eaves, gutters or porch edge |
| NETTA 12m Cluster Lights | Dense cluster | 12m claimed + 10m lead | Mains / 31V | Separate string rating unconfirmed | Adapter: IP44 | 8h on / 16h off | Bushes, shrubs or concentrated displays |
| Ollny 100 LED battery lights | Standard string / battery | 10m | 3 × AA | IP44 claim | Battery box: IP44 claim | 6h on / 18h off | Door, wreath, gate or no nearby socket |
| Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights 2 | Permanent smart lighting | 15m / 30m options | Mains | Lights/modules: IP67 | Control box: IP65 / adapter: IP65 | App / smart automation | Permanent eaves / architectural lighting |
An unconfirmed rating is a gap in the evidence, not a claim of no protection. Check the selected variant and installation instructions. NETTA’s exact LED count is unresolved.
Five outdoor jobs
Choose the location and format before the LED count.
Ollny 1000 LED / 100m warm white
This earns its place because of coverage, not because 1,000 LEDs automatically means an ultra-dense display.
- Lit length / LEDs
- 100m / 1,000
- Lead / cable
- 3m / clear
- Power
- Mains / 31V
- Controls
- 8 modes / memory / 4 brightness levels
- Timer
- 4h / 6h / 8h
- Weather evidence
- IP44 claim; components not separated
Spread across 100m, 1,000 LEDs means around 10 LEDs/m. If you want something packed tightly with light, that’s a different product. This clear-cable warm-white string has eight modes, memory and four brightness levels. Allow for the 3m lead when planning the route to power.
The trade-off. A long run takes time to arrange and store. Ollny’s IP44 imagery does not establish a separate controller or adapter rating; check the instructions and protect the mains connection.
Research notes
- Exact ASIN B0F4DNM8RT matches Ollny’s UK page. Coverage and controls are manufacturer specifications.
- Density is calculated: 1,000 ÷ 100 = 10 LEDs/m.
- IP44 appears in manufacturer image wording. Separate adapter/controller ratings were not confirmed; do not apply that number to every component.
- Included for broad coverage. No physical testing or exact-variant review analysis is claimed.
Ollny 400 LED / 10m icicle lights
If the target is gutters, fascia or a porch edge, a hanging-drop format makes the shape for you.
- Horizontal run
- ≈9.8–10m
- LEDs / drops
- 400 cool white / 66
- Lead
- 3m
- Controls
- 8 modes / 4 brightness levels / timer
- Connectable
- Up to 3 matching sets
- Light rating
- IP44; adapter IP unconfirmed
This cool-white set has 400 LEDs across 66 drops, eight modes, memory and four brightness settings. Ollny permits up to three matching sets connected together. Check the lead length and distance to your socket before buying; the quoted roughly 10m is the horizontal run, not each drop.
The trade-off. Icicles suit an edge better than wrapping a tree. Connect only compatible matching sets as instructed. The manufacturer calls the controller weatherproof without giving it a separate IP number.
Research notes
- Exact ASIN B09CMFN6HB matches the current cool-white manufacturer page.
- Ollny describes 400 LEDs, 66 drops, 9.8m lit run and a 3m lead. Older descriptions may say 396 LEDs or warm white: check the selected variant.
- The page rates the string IP44 and describes a weatherproof controller, but does not clearly assign a separate controller/adapter IP rating.
- Timer is documented; exact durations are not stated here. Included for roofline installation, with no hands-on testing claimed.
NETTA 12m Cluster Lights
A cluster format makes more sense for wrapping a bush, small tree or concentrated garden feature than folding an enormous string back on itself.
- Lit length
- 12m claimed; confirm variant
- LED count
- Unconfirmed / conflicting variants
- Lead
- 10m
- Power / adapter
- 31V / IP44
- Timer
- 8h on / 16h off
- Range spacing
- ≈1.25cm; variant check needed
NETTA’s range lists eight modes, memory, a repeating eight-hours-on / sixteen-hours-off timer and a 10m lead. Its 31V adapter is explicitly rated IP44. The manufacturer advertises about 1.25cm bulb spacing, but the page mixes size variants: confirm the exact lit length and LED count before ordering.
The trade-off. The 12m page does not reconcile its LED count: its selector shows 480 LEDs while the description says 1,000. We cannot verify 480 LEDs over 12m, so no exact count or calculated density is presented as settled.
Why a search link? Amazon listings and product codes can change. Where we can’t verify a stable direct link to the exact variant we researched, we’ll take you to an Amazon search for that model instead. Check the size, colour and specification before buying.
Research notes
- Exact Amazon ASIN was not confirmed in the original research. The current buying button uses an Amazon search for this model.
- Manufacturer page title/specification says 12m; the selector defaults to 480 LEDs while the description says 1,000. The supplied brief’s 480 LED / 12m combination is unresolved.
- Approximately 1.25cm spacing is a range claim, not a verified measurement for the 480 LED variant.
- Manufacturer explicitly assigns IP44 to the 31V adapter. A separate string/controller rating is not established.
- Included for cluster format. Exact variant needs editorial confirmation; no physical testing or review analysis is claimed.
Ollny 100 LED battery lights
The important feature is not 100 LEDs. It’s not needing mains power.
- Length / LEDs
- 10m / 100 warm white
- Cable
- Green
- Power
- 3 × AA, not included
- Modes
- 8
- Timer
- 6h on / 18h off
- Weather claim
- Lights + battery box: IP44
The warm-white 10m string uses green cable and three AA batteries, with eight modes and a daily six-hour timer. It suits a front-door wreath, gate, balcony or small outdoor tree where mains cabling would be awkward. Ollny’s IP44 claim covers the lights and battery box and describes resistance to light rain and moisture.
The trade-off. Three AA batteries contain a finite amount of Christmas. Runtime depends on batteries and use; we have not measured it. Keep the battery box closed and follow the placement instructions.
Research notes
- Exact ASIN B0F38H17L4 matches the manufacturer page.
- Ollny specifies 10m, 100 LEDs, dark green wire, three AA batteries and eight modes. Its six-hour daily timer supports the supplied 6h-on / 18h-off cycle.
- IP44 is the manufacturer’s claim for both lights and battery box, described as light-rain/moisture resistance.
- Included for locations without mains power. Battery runtime is unknown; no testing or exact-product review analysis is claimed.
Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights 2
The premium buys a permanent installation: Christmas lighting in December and exterior accent lighting through the year.
- Options
- 15m H705D / 30m H705E
- Light type
- RGBICW / 100 scenes
- Control
- App / Matter / Alexa / Google Assistant
- Lights/modules
- IP67
- Control box / adapter
- IP65 / IP65
- Power connection
- Indoors or IP65 protective enclosure
The RGBICW system offers app control, 100 scene modes, Matter, Alexa and Google Assistant. UK models are H705D (15m) and H705E (30m). Its lights are IP67; the control box and adapter are IP65. Govee still instructs users to place the adapter indoors or connect it into a socket with an IP65 protective enclosure.
The trade-off. It needs installation planning and an app. IP67 on the lights is not permission to submerge the system or expose the mains connection without suitable protection. These lights are not cuttable.
Why a search link? Amazon listings and product codes can change. Where we can’t verify a stable direct link to the exact variant we researched, we’ll take you to an Amazon search for that model instead. Check the size, colour and specification before buying.
Research notes
- Exact manufacturer models: H705D (15m), H705E (30m). Exact Amazon UK ASIN was not confirmed in the original research. The current buying button uses an Amazon search for this model.
- Component ratings are explicit: lights IP67, control box IP65, adapter IP65.
- Manufacturer additionally requires indoor adapter placement or connection into a socket with an IP65 protective enclosure. Ratings do not override installation instructions.
- Included for year-round exterior lighting. No physical testing or review analysis is claimed.
What does “outdoor” actually mean?
A product can contain a light string or modules, cable, controller, transformer or adapter, and a plug or connection. These may not share the same IP rating.
The rating belongs to the light components.
Govee still requires the adapter indoors or connected into a socket with an IP65 protective enclosure.
When a listing says “WATERPROOF OUTDOOR CHRISTMAS LIGHTS”, don’t stop reading there. Look for which part is actually rated. See Govee’s component ratings and installation condition.
IP44, IP65 and IP67 without the electrical-engineering lecture
IP44
Protection against objects over 1mm and splashes from any direction. Common on seasonal lights; follow the specified outdoor placement conditions.
IP65
Dust-tight and protected against water jets. It is not an immersion rating.
IP67
Dust-tight with temporary immersion protection under defined test conditions, for the rated component.
The number has limits
IP67 does not mean “submerge the whole product”. It does not automatically establish jet resistance either. Plug, socket and adapter arrangements still matter.
IP rating definitions from RS / ILS. The first digit describes solids protection; the second describes water protection.
The outdoor socket matters too
A weather-resistant string can still be undermined by an unsuitable power connection. Outdoor sockets, extension connections and enclosures need to be appropriate for outdoor use. Keep connections away from standing water and follow the light manufacturer’s instructions.
If the adapter must stay indoors or use a rated enclosure, follow that condition. Electrical Safety First recommends indoor plugs and transformers and a 30mA RCD-protected socket for lights plugged in outdoors.
A plastic sandwich bag wrapped around a mains connection is not an IP rating.
String, icicle, cluster or permanent?
Long string
Fences, trees, pergolas and broad coverage. Check lit length separately from the lead.
Icicle
Gutters, eaves and porch edges. Measure the horizontal run and the hanging space.
Cluster
Dense lighting on shrubs and smaller concentrated features.
Battery
Awkward locations without mains, balanced against replacement batteries.
Permanent
Install once, with seasonal colours and year-round architectural effects. Plan mounting and power carefully.
Format matters more outdoors than brand. There is no universal winner across these jobs. Our focused icicle guide compares width, drop depth and lead cable; for garden and patio ambience, see year-round outdoor fairy lights.
Why are there three Ollny products here?
We didn’t set out to choose three products from one manufacturer. The shortlist covers several distinct outdoor jobs, and Ollny provides useful documentation for the long string, icicle and battery options — including exact ASINs, dimensions, lead lengths and power details.
We could swap one for a less well-documented brand purely to make the table look more varied. That wouldn’t improve the guide. We still show where component ratings remain unclear.
Product variety matters. Logo variety doesn’t.
How we researched these lights
Our editorial starting point was an Amazon UK shortlist spanning strings, icicles, clusters, battery and solar sets, projectors and permanent smart systems. We checked the five named candidates against current manufacturer pages and UK electrical-safety guidance. Amazon’s live search could not be independently retrieved during this verification pass.
We have not physically tested these lights or analysed a dependable sample of exact-variant buyer reviews. We do not assume a marketplace title is correct. NETTA’s mixed variant details are explicitly unresolved; the exact LED count needs confirmation before purchase.
Open each product’s Research Notes for sources, identifiers and limits, or read our full methodology.
No waterproof laboratory. Just considerably less faith in the word “waterproof” than we had yesterday.
Buying buttons in this guide lead to direct Amazon UK product links; Amazon searches for the named model. Amazon links currently have no affiliate tags. If affiliate links are introduced, SimplyLit may earn a commission from qualifying purchases, at no extra cost to you. Read our disclosure.
