Fairy lights should be simple. Amazon disagrees.
Search for them and you’ll find thousands of listings that look almost identical: 100 LEDs, 200 LEDs, battery boxes, USB plugs, remotes, timers and various claims about being waterproof.
The numbers do not always tell you much either. A 500-LED set might cover 50 metres, while another packs the same 500 LEDs into just 12.5 metres.
We’ve compared the specifications, power options and practical differences between some useful current choices, rather than simply picking the first products Amazon shows.
Find the right kind of light
Seven different jobs. No forced overall winner.
| Product | Power | Length | LEDs | LEDs/m | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ollny 20m / 200 LED | Mains | 20m | 200 | 10 | Straightforward everyday fairy lights |
| Twinkle Star 20m / 200 LED USB | USB | 20m | 200 | 10 | USB-powered lighting |
| Lezonic 2-pack battery lights | Battery | ≈13m each* | 120 each | ≈9.2 | Places without a nearby socket |
| NETTA 500 LED Close Set | Mains | 12.5m | 500 | 40 | Dense tree or display lighting |
| Ollny 50m / 500 LED | Mains | 50m | 500 | 10 | Covering a large area |
| Govee Christmas String Lights 2 | Mains / smart | 20m | 200 | 10 | Smart effects and customisation |
| Philips Hue Festavia | Mains / smart | 20m | 250 | ≈12.5 | Existing Philips Hue households |
* Lezonic advertises about 13m per string, but we could not confirm whether that includes a short lead. Its LEDs-per-metre figure is approximate.

For the usual jobs
Mains, USB and battery options, plus two very different ways to use 500 LEDs.
Ollny 20m / 200 LED
A useful benchmark: ordinary warm-white lighting, a practical length and plenty of control without moving into smart-light territory.
- Lit length
- 20m
- LEDs
- 200
- LEDs per metre
- 10
- Lead cable
- 3m
- Control
- Remote; timer; eight modes; four brightness levels
The 20m illuminated run has a separate 3m lead. A remote gives you a timer, eight lighting modes and four brightness levels. It is a straightforward choice when you want a familiar mains-powered set rather than an app.
The trade-off. It still needs a socket. Amazon may combine ratings across variants, so a family rating should not be read as evidence for this exact 20m configuration.
Research notes
- Exact Amazon identifier: B07FVHTWM9.
- Ollny identifies the 20m warm-white, 200 LED model on its UK product page.
- Amazon rating totals may include other size or colour variants. No exact-product review analysis is presented.
Twinkle Star 20m / 200 LED USB
The interesting difference is USB power. Its 200 LEDs over 20m are much like Ollny on paper; the connection gives you a different way to place and power it.
- Advertised length
- 20m
- LEDs
- 200
- LEDs per metre
- 10
- Power
- USB
- Control
- Remote; timer; dimming; eight modes
The specified 20m string has 200 LEDs, a remote, timer, dimming and eight modes. It is worth considering when USB power suits your setup.
The trade-off. The light string is advertised as weather-resistant, but the USB connection is not something to leave exposed to rain. Large Amazon rating totals may be pooled across variants and are not treated as exact-model evidence here.
Research notes
- Supplied exact Amazon identifier: B0D78S3KRH.
- A manufacturer page for this exact variant was not located in this pass; confirm the current listing details.
- Weather-resistance claims apply to the string, not automatically to the USB connection.
- Amazon ratings may include other variants. No exact-product review analysis is presented.
Lezonic 2-pack battery lights
Two independent strings give you placement freedom. Choose them because you need that freedom, not because batteries are inherently better.
- Advertised length
- About 13m per string*
- LEDs
- 120 per string
- Approx. LEDs per metre
- 9.2*
- Power
- Battery
- Control
- Remote; timer; eight modes
Each string is advertised at about 13m with 120 LEDs, remote control, a timer and eight modes. The two-pack format lets you split a display between separate spots.
The trade-off. Battery power means ongoing battery use. The advertised 13m may include a short lead; the exact illuminated run needs confirmation, so the calculated density is only approximate.
Research notes
- Supplied exact Amazon identifier: B08J6PZBWG.
- Lezonic advertises two 120 LED, 13m battery-powered strings. The manufacturer page does not clearly separate illuminated length from lead length.
- LED density uses 120 ÷ 13; it is approximate until lit length is confirmed.
- No exact-product buyer-review analysis is available.
NETTA 500 LED Close Set
Five hundred LEDs over just 12.5m create a deliberately packed effect. This is about density, not covering the largest possible area.
- Lit length
- 12.5m
- LEDs
- 500
- LEDs per metre
- 40
- LED spacing
- About 2.5cm
- Lead / adapter
- 5m lead; 31V; IP44 adapter
NETTA states approximately 2.5cm spacing, a 5m lead, a 31V adapter, eight modes and timer/memory functions. Its adapter is rated IP44.
The trade-off. That close spacing is useful for a full-looking tree or small display, but less useful when you need to stretch light over a long fence or room.
Why a search link? Amazon listings and product codes can change. Where we can’t verify a stable direct link to the exact variant we researched, we’ll take you to an Amazon search for that model instead. Check the size, colour and specification before buying.
Research notes
- NETTA’s 500 LED close-set variant specifies 12.5m lit length and 2.5cm spacing.
- Manufacturer source specifies an IP44 adapter. Check the exact Amazon variant before buying.
- No exact-product buyer-review analysis is available.
Ollny 50m / 500 LED
Same number of LEDs as the NETTA set. Completely different job: the points of light are spread across four times the length.
- Lit length
- 50m
- LEDs
- 500
- LEDs per metre
- 10
- Lead cable
- 3m
- Control
- Remote; eight modes; three timers; four brightness levels; memory
Ollny lists a 50m illuminated run and 3m lead, with 31V power, remote, eight modes, three timer settings, four brightness levels and memory. The listed protection rating is IP44.
The trade-off. At 10 LEDs per metre, it will look much less densely packed than the NETTA close set. That may be exactly what you need for a larger space.
Research notes
- Exact Amazon identifier B0B4B2X2XN appears on Ollny’s UK product page.
- Ollny lists 50m, 500 LEDs, a 3m lead, 31V operation and IP44 protection.
- No exact-product buyer-review analysis is presented.
Want something smarter?
Spending much more is not simply buying more LEDs. You are paying for software, effects, scenes, automation and a place in a smart-home system.
Govee Christmas String Lights 2
This is about effects and control, not a brighter version of an ordinary warm-white string.
- Model
- H70C4
- Lit length
- 20m
- LEDs
- 200
- LEDs per metre
- 10
- Control
- Govee Home; Alexa; Google Home; Matter
- Weather protection
- String IP65; adapter needs protection
The exact 20m H70C4 has 200 LEDs, not 300. Govee offers RGBWIC colour, control of individual beads, 130+ scenes, shape mapping, custom effects and music modes through Govee Home. It supports Alexa, Google Home and Matter.
The trade-off. If you only want a warm string around a mirror or tree, a simpler set can do that. The string is rated IP65, while Govee says to keep the adapter in a dry place or suitable outdoor box.
Why a search link? Amazon listings and product codes can change. Where we can’t verify a stable direct link to the exact variant we researched, we’ll take you to an Amazon search for that model instead. Check the size, colour and specification before buying.
Research notes
- Govee’s H70C4 specification lists 66ft (about 20m) and 200 light sources.
- Govee lists RGBWIC, 130+ scenes, Govee Home, Alexa, Google Home and Matter.
- Govee rates the string IP65 and instructs users to keep the adapter dry or in an appropriate box.
- Exact Amazon UK listing remains to be confirmed. No review analysis is presented.
Philips Hue Festavia
Festavia makes most sense when fitting into your existing Hue home is itself valuable to you.
- EAN
- 8720169246645
- Lit length
- 20m
- LEDs
- 250
- LEDs per metre
- 12.5
- Power
- 14W
- Weather protection
- String IP54; PSU IP20; UK outlet indoors
The 20m model has 250 white-and-colour LEDs, a stated 14W rating and 15,000-hour nominal LED lifetime. It uses Bluetooth and Zigbee and can join Hue scenes, switches and automations. Philips Hue lists Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit, Matter and SmartThings compatibility.
The trade-off. It can show multiple colours along the string, but Hue’s controls are not the same as Govee’s manual per-bead customisation. If you do not use Hue already, the ecosystem premium may offer little value.
Why a search link? Amazon listings and product codes can change. Where we can’t verify a stable direct link to the exact variant we researched, we’ll take you to an Amazon search for that model instead. Check the size, colour and specification before buying.
Research notes
- Exact Philips Hue EAN/UPC: 8720169246645.
- Philips Hue specifies 20m, 250 LEDs, 14W, nominal 15,000-hour lifetime, Bluetooth and Zigbee.
- The manufacturer lists the string as IP54 and the power supply as IP20. Its UK guidance requires an indoor power outlet.
- Exact Amazon UK listing remains to be confirmed. No review analysis is presented.
Don’t be dazzled by the LED count
12.5m · 40 LEDs/m
50m · 10 LEDs/m
Five hundred LEDs can mean 12.5 metres or 50 metres. Neither is automatically better. A dense string can make a tree or small display look packed with light; a lower-density run can cover a fence, room or garden without several separate sets. Look at length and LED count together.

What does “waterproof” actually mean?
A listing can describe the light string as weatherproof while the plug, adapter, controller, battery box or USB connection has a different protection level. Check each part, not just the headline IP number.
String: IP65. Govee says its adapter should be kept dry or placed in a suitable outdoor box.
String: IP54. Power supply: IP20. Philips Hue says UK installations need an indoor power outlet.
For rooflines, shrubs and permanent exterior setups, see our outdoor Christmas lights guide.
An IP rating describes a specified component under defined conditions. Follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions.
How we researched these products
SimplyLit does not physically test every product we feature. We compare manufacturer specifications, current retailer information and exact model identifiers. We use customer feedback only when we can relate it reliably to the product being discussed.
Amazon can combine ratings and reviews across sizes, colours or variants. We have not analysed a meaningful body of exact-product reviews for this guide, so there are no buyer-sentiment scores or review findings here.
